Olympic High School in Concord has earned $3,000 and the right to show off its
collective milk mustache by winning the Got Milk? Breakfast Challenge.
Going head-to-head with Mt. Diablo and Concord High for the three-week contest
held at the start of the fall semester, the Olympic students increased their
breakfast participation with milk by 3 1/2 percent compared to the year before.
"Traditionally, only one in 10 student eats breakfast in school in our
district," said Suzanne Bernhard, supervisor of Food & Nutrition Services in the
Mt. Diablo Unified School District. "So a small increase in consumption actually
makes a huge difference. We thank Got Milk? for being a great partner in this
effort."
Olympic High was recognized by the California Milk Processor Board during a
student leadership meeting for winning the challenge and the funding for their
school.
Studies show that up to a third of adolescents skip breakfast daily. To deter
the trend, the milk board partnered with 14 school districts across the state to
increase daily breakfast consumption with milk at school high school cafeterias.
The campuses with the greatest breakfast participation with milk in each
district earned $3,000 toward student activities for a grand total of $42,000
statewide.
